I always enjoy attempting to come up with recipes for various types of dog treats (lots of
attempting involved). And I take requests! Do you have a need for a recipe for a treat you haven't come across or maybe you have but it didn't turn out? Perhaps with certain ingredients included or excluded? Please let me know and I will do my best to produce something useful, or at the least edible.
Can you make a suggestion or point me in the right direction for peanut butter flavored treats that may help the hips & joints? I've got an older Dobe who's joints aren't very comfortable right now with the cold we've got in New Jersey.
ReplyDeleteThanks! :)
Hi Jenny,
ReplyDeleteThe amount of glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and other joint supplements required for a Doberman sized dog to gain any benefit is far more than can be put into a treat (or kibble even) unfortunately. You really have to add those supplements to the dog's food (or hide them in peanut butter if that works for you!) I had good results with a dog who had torn both cruciates by including the above supplements in her diet.
That said, I have seen treats marketed as being helpful for hips and joints which I'm sure you could find easily via any search engine. I think the company Dogswell is one that markets "hip and joint" treats.
Wonderful! Thanks for the tips
ReplyDeleteHow about a recipe for healthy carob brownies that I can share with the beasties?
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind being able to make soft treats (texture like snausages or Bil Jac treats) at home that weren't all sugar and propylene glycol.
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't matter if I had to store them in the fridge or freezer.
I do make carob brownies for the dogs but I've never tried them myself as I hate carob! I'll see if I can brave a bite to taste test them.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure I can do better than Snausages. Stay tuned.
Jenny W, there is a soft chew called Glycoflex available in three strengths that, to the dog, seems like a tasty treat but contains lots of glucosamine and chondroitin. Lots of places carry it but I know it is currently on sale at Dr. Fosters & Smith w/ free shipping. :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to see some egg-free, cheese-free recipes for my crew to enjoy!
