Treats on the Internets

The article is titled "Fighting birds didn't have a chance" and describes the killing of gamecocks by authorities at a NC residence. One way to interpret the piece is that fighting Pitbulls are regularly saved (uh, no) but fighting birds are not:

When federal officers busted up former NFL quarterback Michael Vick’s dog-fighting ring, many of the pit bulls were saved by animal lovers patient enough to work with the abused and violent dogs.

No such salvation awaits fighting birds after a big-time bust. The morning the birds were discovered, three Moore County animal control officers worked for six hours, shooting each bird in the head with a .22-caliber pistol.

Was even a single phone call made to any rescue organization in an effort to save any of the birds? Cos it doesn't sound like it. The reason the birds "didn't have a chance" had nothing to do with lack of effort by animal lovers and everything to do with the immediate killing of the birds by police.

Also, which of Vick's rescued dogs were "violent"? Obviously not all of them, but the statement could be taken that way.

An otherwise nice story about a rescued Pitbull in Santa Barbara is marred by HSUS commentary on saving bust dogs:

Humane Society officials are wary of all the publicity generated by the Michael Vick pit bull matter. Yes, many of the dogs were turned around to live happy, normal lives, but the effort cost a lot of money. Most pit bulls taken from a fighting situation end up getting the needle.

“You don’t hear so much about the abused and neglected dogs that get euthanized,” said Adam Goldfarb, a pit bull expert with the Humane Society of the United States. “Not all dogs are able to recover from traumatic circumstances.”

Yeah they aren't able to recover too well when the HSUS kills them either. (Note to journalists: Asking the HSUS for info on saving bust dogs is about as reasonable as asking Jim Jones for punch recipes.)

A "spinning" technique for tick removal - I'm going to try it on the next unlucky tick that latches on to one of the dogs.

***

When fire breaks out in family's home, they sleep through smoke alarm so Pitbull gets on the job of waking the family up!

The Iditarod killed 5 dogs this year and people are talking about it.

oh, so Goldfarb "didn't get the memo" about the spiffy new HSUS policy on evaluating bust dogs individually?

it couldn't be that Pacelle you know, like, lied?

Gee "lied" seems so harsh. Maybe it's just "Said the thing that seemed most likely to stop the donation hemorraging at that moment" Their Las Vegas hotel meeting is coming up soon so we shall see what, if anything, comes from that.

Goldfarb is their 'pit bull' expert now? The conehead who thinks breed-specific mandatory neutering isn't a breed ban?

It sounds pretty easy to be an Hsux 'expert'.

Maybe I should apply. Oh, wait, I think having common sense and understanding other animals is a disqualification for employment at the Hsux.

The gal that testified to the judge on behalf of HSUS in the Wilkes Co "disposal" hearing was an office manager 10 months before and used to go around neighborhoods on chain patrol. So yeah, I think you could get a job - even with a brain. I don't think they check.

Oh, there's no doubt that Wayne will sign some kind of nice "even fight dogs should be evaluated" statement at the LV meeting.

And there's no doubt that Goldfarb, Goodwin and all the other frontline HSUS spokesrobots will continue to raise public doubts about actual dogs in actual busts. And NOT advocate (or God forbid, spend any actual $$$) for the saving of any actual dogs in any actual busts.

Meanwhile BR, BF and their ilk will coo and get all gushy about how much they influenced HSUS, how much HSUS has changed and how everyone can trust them now, for sure, really, this time, because no, really, they're not as bad as PETA, so that's good, right? Those people really believe that they can beat HSUS at the PR game. Fools, they are FODDER for HSUS. HSUS will eat their lunch.

I'll bet the house on it.

Well don't bet against me! It will take lots of bust dog saving action (at LEAST as much action as has been taken to get bust dogs KILLED) to sway me. The thing is, if the HSUS is serious about their "interim" policy, there are bust dogs sitting in shelters RIGHT NOW that surely could use some financial and/or legal intervention. WHERE is the HSUS?

Yes, Emily, it's funny in an ironic way watching all the Hsux apologists/pigeons grasping at the waterlogged straws Hsux deigns to toss their way. It's the old Lucy and the football thing, every single time.

I used to work at a large urban shelter that euthanized all pit bulls, no questions asked. It only took a few introductions to the many sweet pits who came through our doors to see that this policy was completely wrong-headed. That said, I take issue with the relentlessly snarky comments about HSUS. This organization has done a lot for pit bulls - a standing reward for the arrest and conviction of dogfighters, felony-level dogfighting penalties in all 50 states, a new breed ambassador program in Charlotte and Atlanta, etc, etc. The situation is not as black and white as you'd like to paint it.

Indeed my friend Anonymous (may I call you Anon?), you are correct. Nothing is black and white. HSUS, PETA and other radical groups have done and continue to do some good things for pets. But they celebrate their do-goodedness far and wide on their own - they hardly need me for that.
I take issue with the killing of pets without qualified, individual evaluations while posing as a group who would *protect* these pets AND asking for donations along the way. The fact is that HSUS has committed financial, legal and media resources extensively to get unevaluated Pitbulls summarily killed. I take issue with that.
My blog is representative of my opinions and my interest in exposing the truth. I provide sources regularly so readers can read more and check for themselves. I don't pretend to be "fair and balanced" (that's more snark, Anon) but I am honest in my opinions and make my best effort to find facts and bring them to light, particularly where they've been pushed into a dark closet.
