Just Sayin'

If you've ever tried to engage a religious zealot who knocked on your door to convert you in a reasonable discussion of the "Live and let live" principle, you know the meaning of pointless. They are driven to show the world that everybody else is wrong, they're right and good news, you can - and absolutely must - join them (unless you want to burn in the eternal fires of hell).

You know what group reminds me of those people? Cesar Millan haters.

If you think Cesar Millan is Satan incarnate, yippy damn skippy for you - have a balloon. Whatever. You don't have to watch his show, read his books or say anything nice about him ever. But seriously, if you feel compelled to go frothy on every e-mail list, forum or blog post that mentions the man's name, you might want to consider changing the channel in your brain once in awhile. This is getting really old.

Thanks for this.

If there's a strategy -- as opposed to just a white tide of roiling hatred that they are helpless to control, which seems as likely -- I think the idea is to make it so painful for anyone to mention the man's name, ever, anywhere, that everyone else just cringes at the thought of what is to come, and skips it.

Which is super interesting, because all these people will tell you with a straight face that positive punishment is Satan's Quadrant and they would never do such a thing.

Except for every frickin' day, to their fellow human beings.

THANK you. I don't use his methods, or even agree with 90% of what he does, but i'll always acknowledge that he's saved dogs. and i know, first hand, what works for one dog may not work for another.

"Except for every frickin' day, to their fellow human beings."

LOL!
YB, I love the "we don't think people should hate Cesar, and we hate those people who hate him!" comments. As well as the "people exaggerate so much when they criticize Cesar that we're going to exaggerate to attack them!"

Humorously, my experience with Cesar Millan fans is exactly what my answer to this question would be.

I'd prefer people that speak out against him be civil, at least in public, but everyone needs a place to vent. This applies to both sides equally, as both sides have their zealots.

I generally dislike the man.

I dislike the jargon.

I dislike the folk ethology.

But I stopped watching his show regularly about two years ago.

And I don't do anything on him for the blog.

The real reason why I stopped watching him had nothing to do with all the training stuff.

It was when a friend saw him on TBN.

I don't take anything from anyone who has been on TBN and that includes Pat Robertson's miracle pancake/shake goo.

I don't hate the man... I hate the sensation surrounding him, which is only partially his fault.

I actually used to watch his show with some regularity, but last week I watched him asphyxiate a dog until it was barely conscious. I'm no slouch when it comes to leash corrections, but as far as I'm concerned there's a pretty clear line in the sand.

What irritates me most about the screaming mobs of haters, however, is that they make any rational criticism of the man damn near impossible. Of course, the screaming mobs of fans who think he is infallible are almost as bad.

On a related note, I had a woman tell me today that she watches Cesar all the time, so when her neighbour's dog jumped up on her, she "poked him." She still had the tooth marks to prove it.

I have to admit, I had a good chuckle.
