Seeking BFF

I was just checking back on NC's Alexander Co shelter site to see if the senior dog who looked like she had just whelped a litter was still listed. She isn't although the 2 puppies still are. I wonder what happened to her.

While browsing the listings, I came across this dog (pictured) who is listed as a "Hound mix" but looks like a Pointer to me, albeit an emaciated one. He was picked up as a stray and put up for adoption on February 17 after no one claimed him. I bet he'd be a nice pet.

Oldies are Goodies

This is a posting from Alexander County Animal Shelter in North Carolina:

This female Pit mix came in as a stray from the area of Polk St. Animal # 10157.
Interested? Call: 828-632-1199 or Email Us
Shelter is located off Hwy 16 N near the National Guard Armory.
Address
116 Waggin Trail
Taylorsville, NC 28681
Hours: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8:30 am - 12pm, 1pm-4:30 pm

***
The posting indicates she was added January 7. From the photo, she appears to be a senior dog and to have a litter on the ground. Elsewhere in the shelter's listings are a couple of "Pit mix" puppies, 5 weeks old, added February 8. I am guessing these are two of her pups. There is a posting on Facebook indicating she passed a temperament test but will be killed tomorrow if unadopted although I have no confirmation on either of those things. I hope someone will be willing to take her home and give her a snuggly blanket and tasty food for whatever time she has left in this life.

WI Greyhound Track to Close

Dairyland Greyhound Park in WI is set to end racing on December 31, 2009. From their website:
Wisconsin State law provides that the greyhounds are to be adopted to new homes, sent to another racetrack for racing purposes or returned to their owners. Our kennel compound will remain open until all greyhounds are properly placed.
If you are interested in adopting a racing Greyhound, visit the website for more information.

Room for Four More?

Chicago area: The wife in this story had been battling lung cancer for the past year. She apparently felt up to a short motorcycle ride with her husband, a maintenance man at an apartment complex, on Labor Day weekend. Sadly, they were both killed when a car struck them.
For Susan and Mike Kelms, their four dogs were like their children. And they always hoped they would stay together if anything happened to them.

About two weeks after the Kelmses were both killed in a fatal motorcycle crash over the Labor Day weekend, their family and a Burr Ridge shelter is looking for someone to adopt the pack.
[...]
They are 6-year-old Anacortes, a 47-pound female American Eskimo lab mix; 3-year-old Cedonia, a 34-pound female husky mix; 7-year-old Tacoma, a 92-pound male lab mix; and Everett, a 4-year-old, 47-pound, male Austrian Shepard lab mix.

The dogs are described as "well-mannered" and "best friends" who hang together at the shelter. Their late owners, who rescued each of the dogs, considered them family members. I hope what remains of this family can stay together, even if it's a long shot.

Not ALL of the Good Ones are Taken

This precious 10 year old, 3 legged Pibble is currently accepting applications from prospective owners at Fulton County Animal Services in Atlanta GA. My friend Melissa at the shelter says:
Good with people, kids and most dogs. Not sure about cats. In as a stray. We named her Vera. Free to GA rescues with AG paperwork. $85 to adopt. Will update all shots, chip, and heartworm test.

Vera's personal secretary can be reached at 404 794 0358.

Franklin, TN: Temporary Home of SCRAPPY

1. This sounds like a pretty good dog to have around the house.
2. I can not resist any dog named "Scrappy".

From e-mail:
SCRAPPY is a precious Lab/Pit mix who is eight months old. He has
been at Williamson County Animal Control since April 29. I am hoping
to find a rescue for him.

Scrappy is such a fun dog! He is a very energetic, happy-go-lucky
puppy! Scrappy runs right up to the front of the kennel to greet you,
tail wagging and entire back end gyrating with joy. He loves to go
for walks and enthusiastically takes you along! He is an affectionate
puppy who will stand up on his back legs to be hugged, and also gives
plenty of puppy kisses. He loves toys and treats!

Scrappy's happiest times are playing in the dog park. I took the
pictures listed below a few hours ago. As you can see, he is having a
fine time playing with the toys!

Scrappy is a bright pup who should be easy to train. He would be a
great running buddy. Sadly, he gets overlooked in favor of younger
puppies.

If anyone can rescue Scrappy, HIS PULL FEE WILL BE PAID!

He is current on worming, distemper/parvo and Bordatella vaccinations,
plus worming. Scrappy is heartworm negative. Prior to leaving Animal
Control, he will be neutered, microchipped and given a rabies
vaccination.

I know it is a long shot, but maybe a rescue miracle can happen for
Scrappy. PLEASE CROSSPOST ON SCRAPPY'S BEHALF. If anyone can help,
please contact me at kmenzyk@yahoo.com.
