LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) - A 74-year-old Lakeland woman was hospitalized after being mauled by a pack of raccoons she tried to shoo from her yard.
Gretchen Whitted fell when five raccoons surrounded and attacked, suffering extensive cuts from her neck to her legs.
"We're not talking about a lot of little bites here," Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said. "She was filleted."
In Seattle, I had a raccoon family living in my garage and they kept me trapped inside my car many a time. I didn't want to get filleted.

Raccoons occasionally kill coonhounds that pursue them. The racoon takes the hound into a body of water where the hound can't touch bottom and then the raccoon doubles back on the dog in the water, jumps on its head, and pushes it under until it drowns.
Another trick raccoons have is to grab a dog by the tongue and then pulls it out. The dog then either bleeds to death or it has to be put to sleep. Dogs without tongues can't drink.
Coyotes, which have more sense than dogs, usually avoid raccoons at all costs.
Geez Louise! That sounds evil. But I guess it's not like the raccoons can just run up a tree to safety in those cases.
plus they are prime carriers of rabies.
Retrieverman -- yeah, I remember an old Twilight Zone episode that featured such a raccoon. In the end it did the same underwater trick to the dog's owner, too. =P
