Those Old Yellow Magazine Clippings

H/T to They are What They Eat

One of my Favorite Things is looking at old dog photos. I came across a collection on Photobucket of some good ones:

Flatcoated Retriever photos

Beagle photos

Saluki photos (another breed on my wish list)

and another of my fetishes: old clippings about what people fed dogs before the invention of commercial dog food

Those are great. I just spent way too much time looking at them.

Haha, that's my album. Glad you enjoyed them. Reading the books is nearly as fun as looking at the pictures -- some of the history and gossip about early breed clubs is pretty entertaining.

Oh Pai - small world! In this case, since we're already BFFs, please do tell if you have additional pieces (such as the complete pages) on the subject of dog feeding. I would most def love to read those!

You can read all the books online, I've bookmarked the ones I used pictures from in the album here on Internet Archive.

The two that I have food paragraphs from are 'Dogs as Home Companions' and 'The Dog Book Volume 1'. Almost all of the books have sections on feeding, though. It's interesting reading the debates over how much meat vs veggies dogs should be eating going on even back then!

One thing that is so important is that all companion animals are living longer than just a couple of decades ago. The animal life span is growing just as that of a human being. Better knowledge and better food = longer life.

Those old flat-coats look like golden retrievers, just they are black. The reason why the two look so differently today is because they have been bred to different standards for enough generations to change them. The dog in my avatar is more lightly built than some of those flat-coats, whereas it's really unusual to find lightly built goldens (except in hunting tests) or heavily built flat-coats.

Here are some really heavy-bodied flat-coats: http://retrieverman.wordpress.com/2009/01/16/some-heavy-bodied-flat-coats/
